Woman Who Allegedly Left Dog in Hot Car Complains About Heat in Police Car

A woman who was arrested last Thursday for animal cruelty after allegedly leaving her dog in a hot car to die later complained that the police cruiser transporting her was too hot, police said.

Orlando, Florida, police said Jose Thomas, 28, locked her dog Lily alone in a crate while she ran errands. The dog later had to be put to sleep, police said.

“Lily the dog lost her life… because of her human’s carelessness,” a post on the Orland Police Department’s Facebook page reads. “It’s not clear how long Lily was placed alone inside a crate in a car while her owner, Jose Thomas, ran errands.”

The Facebook post continues: “While Thomas was sitting in the back seat of my vehicle with the air condition on full blast and the rear windows fully opened, she stated it was really hot in the back seat. I then asked Thomas how she thinks her dog felt with the car not running and stuck inside a crate and at that time, Thomas did understand the extent of what she did.”

Thomas said she thought it would have been OK to leave her dog in the car, according to according to WESH.

The temperature was 89 degrees with Lily locked inside, according to meterologists with MyNews13.

Exposing a dog to these conditions can within minutes heat the car to temperatures over 100 degrees and lead to brain damage or death from heatstroke or suffocation, according to to the Humane Society of the United States.
