Dr. Dre has issued an apology in response to the growing controversy over his hit film “Straight Outta Compton.”
While the N.W.A. biopic has been a box office success, it has also received backlash for failing to acknowledge Dre’s history of violence against women.
The growing outcry over the film’s omission of the alleged incidents led the 50-year-old rapper to address the uproar.
“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life,” he said Friday in a statement to the New York Times.
“However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”
“I apologize to the women I’ve hurt,” he added. “I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
The allegations against the 50-year-old rapper have been brought to the forefront because of the success of the biopic, which Dre executive produced.
