When Candace Toinette McCray went to the Palm Beach Garden Police station to speak with detectives regarding the theft of jewelry from an 85-year-old woman, she showed up wearing diamond-stud earrings.
“It is possible,” McCray told police when asked if the earrings belonged to the victim, the report said. “But I don’t remember taking diamonds from her.”The fashion choice turned out to be a poor one. Police recognized the earrings as part of the loot McCray allegedly stole from the elderly victim in 2013, according to an arrest report.
McCray, 36, is facing 8 counts each of dealing in stolen property and fraud and one count of theft from a person 65 years or older. McCray was released from the Palm Beach County Jail Saturday after posting a $25,500 bond.
The victim told police she had around $8,000 worth of jewelry stolen in late 2013 while residing at an assisted living facility in Palm Beach Gardens. McCray, of Royal Palm Beach, worked at the time at the same facility as a nurse’s aide.
During their investigation, detectives found that McCray had pawned several items of jewelry in West Palm Beach.
Recently, the victim was receiving treatment at a rehabilitation center in Palm Beach Gardens for a shoulder issue when she recognized McCray, who was working at the facility as a physical therapy assistant. The elderly woman also recognized the diamond-stud earrings that McCray was wearing as part of the items stolen from her in 2013. They were the same earrings that McCray would take for her interview with detectives.
