A 49-year-old woman in Alabama has been convicted of killing her 9-year-old granddaughter by running the child to death.
Joyce Garrard, the grandmother of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin, was convicted Friday of capital murder for “punishing” the little girl for eating chocolate on the school bus by forcing her to run for close to three hours until she collapsed. Hardin died days later at a hospital as a result of dehydration and low sodium.
Garrard forced Savannah Hardin to run and pick up sticks for hours as penance for lying, prosecutors said. She made the girl run even though Savannah vomited and begged for relief.
Jurors took about four hours Friday to convict Joyce Hardin Garrard of murder. She could face the death penalty.
Savannah’s stepmother, Jessica Mae Hardin, has also been charged with capital murder for failing to intervene…
