Personnel of the State Security Services (SSS), Umuahia in Abia State on Tuesday arrested a lecturer with the Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu (ASCETA), over what was described as an ‘insulting’ text message the lecturer sent to Governor Theodore Orji.
It was gathered that the lecturer, whose name could not be immediately obtained, had about a fortnight ago, out of frustration sent a text message to the governor, informing him that workers in the institution had not been paid their salaries in the past eight months and at the same time reminding him that a worker deserved his pay.
The said SMS reportedly did not go down well with some Abia government officials, who detailed some SSS officials for the lecturer’s arrest. According to a source, on Tuesday, men of the SSS arrested the lecturer at his residence in Ohafia at 6.30a.m. and took him to Umuahia where he was said to have been interrogated in their office. The SSS men were reported to have, at about 8.00p.m. on the same day, taken the lecturer to Government House where he reportedly met a very senior government official, who asked him whether he was the one that sent the ‘insulting’ SMS.
The lecturer reportedly responded that he never meant to insult His Excellency but that as a hungry man, who was angry; his choice of words might have been viewed from that angle.
The lecturer was scolded at the Government House after which he was told to look for alternative job if he was not happy with the way he was being treated at his present work place. He was thereafter set free at about 8.30p.m.
